The role of world organisations in maintaining peace.

Shanti or peace is not what we find in this present world. Wherever we look we see attacks, violence and instability. But what we are doing right now is what was said in the Bible, 'Saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace'. There are so many problems in our world- poverty, illiteracy, racism, terrorism, chronic ill-health in people of under developed regions, etc.

We have to create a much better world than what we have today. We should be concerned about the future because we will have to spend the rest of our lives there. We can take life as we find it but we cannot leave it as it is. We have to 'Heal the World'. But in this world which longs to play that mad game of war, it is tough to do anything single handed, for the present or the future.

This is where the various world organisations play a lead role. It is said 'Blessed are the peace makers'. So it can be beleived that the most blessed of all in this world are the international organisations which do a lot of work in maintaining world peace like the UN, NATO, SAARC, NAM, etc.

It is well known how much these organisations act as referees in the deadly matches played among nations. In the Mahabharatha it is said that millions died during the Kurukshetra war. But if there were any international organisation at that time, even before the war the Pandavas and Kauravas would have signed a treaty!

It is after the Second World war that we really understood the need for effective international organisations which would make the actions of the nations more balanced and rational. If it weren't for these organisations, we would now have been waiting for the 8th or 9th world war i.e, if humanity still existed! But because of their actions we have escaped so many serious war situations.

The problems in Korea, Vietnam, Falklands, Cambodia, etc could have escalated into world wars if it were not for the international organisations. The crisis situations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, Chechnia, Kosovo, Kashmir, Sri Lanka, Northern Ireland, East Timor, etc could probably be diffused by more effort by these organisations.

'By uniting we stand; by diving we fall', according to Dickinson. This world has to be organised. Maybe various undertakings like the European Parliament are a stepping stone to world organisation and hence to world peace.

All these tell us that world peace is not accidental. And this site takes you to some of the international organisations which play an important role in maintaining world peace.
